- Filming began in Venice on the same day that a lockdown was announced in northern Italy due to the coronavirus epidemic. Work on the film was urgently transferred to Rome, but the lockdown was announced there as well.
- During filming in Italy, twelve crew members tested positive for the coronavirus. Because of this, when filming resumed in the UK, Tom Cruise paid half a million pounds out of his own money for an old cruise ship, on board which crew members and actors could live in isolation.
