Le Samourai (1967)

Description

Jeff Costello is a contract killer. An intelligent, experienced and cold-blooded professional who is considered the best in his field. While fulfilling his next order, he accidentally encounters an unwanted witness - a nightclub pianist who saw his face. The police commissioner organizes a hunt for the killer, and Zhef, along with the rest of the suspects, is taken to the station for identification and interrogation. But thanks to a well-organized alibi and the testimony of a pianist who “did not recognize” Costello, he is released. Concerned about this development of events, the customers decide to take Jef out of the game, but everything does not go according to plan.

Interesting Facts

  • The film is based on the novel Ronin by Joan MacLeod.
  • The empty canary cage, which the viewer sees at the very beginning of the film, appears in the scene (the meeting of the characters Delon and Michel Bon in the basement) of the film “Untamed” (1982) under a musical quote - the theme from “Samurai”.
  • Andre Garre came to the filming of the film from the hospital. Before his death, he managed to voice his role. His line - “I warn you, Jeff, this is the last time” - seems like a goodbye forever. • The film opens with a phrase from the samurai code that the loneliness of a samurai can only be compared to the loneliness of a tiger in the jungle. This phrase was coined by Jean-Pierre Melville himself.
  • At 92 minutes of the film, in the scene where the girl is chasing Alain Delon’s hero, you can see a poster for the film “Accident” (1966) on the wall in the subway.
