Useful facts about oxygen concentrators
An oxygen concentrator is an apparatus for isolating oxygen molecules from the surrounding atmosphere, concentrating them, and delivering them as a stream of pure oxygen. It is used in oxygen therapy — oxygen is supplied to the patient in a higher concentration than in atmospheric air.
There are the following types of oxygen concentrators:
- Medical oxygen concentrators are used in hospitals, sanatorium facilities, and emergency vehicles. Such devices vary in purpose. This can be emergency care or long-term oxygen therapy for lung and heart diseases. Stationary devices with a capacity of 5 to 10 liters per minute are installed in therapeutic departments and operating rooms. Ambulances are equipped with portable oxygen concentrators.
- Universal oxygen concentrators of medium capacity (up to 5 liters/min). They are suitable for home use, as well as for hospitals, sanatoriums, as well as fitness centers, beauty salons, and so on. Such devices can be used for both preventive and curative purposes.
- Oxygen concentrators for home use have low capacity (1-3 l/min). These are compact, easy-to-use devices with an aesthetically pleasing modern design. The devices are suitable for the preparation of an oxygen cocktail and for preventive inhalation (a nebulizer may be included in the kit).
How do I choose a device?
- Performance. As mentioned above, it is not necessary to purchase a powerful device for preventive purposes. A concentrator with a capacity of 1-3 liters/min can handle short-term inhalations. However, if the device is required for long-term treatment, higher-power units should be considered.
- Saturation of the O2 stream. The higher this indicator, the more pure oxygen is contained in the resulting gas mixture. In "advanced" devices, the saturation of the stream reaches 95% at maximum performance.
- Duration of continuous operation. If the device is needed for long-term oxygen therapy, it is recommended to choose devices that can work without shutting down for 24 hours.
- Dimensions. Mini hubs for home use are compact devices that are suitable even for small apartments. The higher the performance, the larger the dimensions of the device.
- Noise level. This indicator also depends on performance. Oxygen concentrators for the home are quite quiet — from 35 to 45 dB. This noise level is comparable to a calm conversation.
- Functionality. The choice of possibilities is determined based on the purpose of the device. If a concentrator is needed for inhalation, it is important that it has a nebulizer outlet and is equipped with a humidifier. If the device is required for the preparation of oxygen cocktails, the corresponding option should be indicated in the description.
- Service life and manufacturer's warranty. Oxygen concentrators of different models are designed for different periods of operation. On average, it is 5-10 years old. The warranty period can be up to three years.
