Based on the data of the statistics agency, in 2022 Uzbekistan significantly increased the import of paper and cardboard. Compared to the previous year, the import of paper products into the country increased by 12.8%, which in quantitative terms is an increase of 29.6 thousand (231.2 against 260.8 thousand tons)

Does Uzbekistan produce paper

In recent years, the industry of Uzbekistan has shown significant growth, in particular, in the paper production sector. The main type of paper produced in Uzbekistan is traditionally cardboard, which occupies a leading position in the domestic market. White office paper is rarely produced in the country, which makes the cardboard segment especially significant.

For the period from January to October 2022, large manufacturing enterprises of the Republic of Uzbekistan reported the release of 5,624.1 tons of packaging materials, including boxes, crates and cartons made of corrugated cardboard. This volume of production is more than two times higher than the figures achieved in the same period of the previous 2021, indicating a significant acceleration in the growth rate in this industry.

In addition, Uzbekistan has recently begun to master the production of environmentally friendly and innovative stone paper, which is a unique industry not only for the region, but also for the global paper industry as a whole. This new type of product has a number of advantages, including increased strength and moisture resistance, as well as minimal environmental impact during manufacture and disposal.

A new plant was built jointly with China in the Ferghana region. It is planned to produce 9 thousand tons of stone paper per year here.

So, in Uzbekistan, according to the statistics described above, it is clear that the import and production of paper are growing, which means that demand is also growing, this may be due to the overall economic growth in the country, the growth of certain sectors of the economy, as well as the development of areas where paper products are still indispensable.

Has paper become more expensive or cheaper in 2023

In April 2022, the cost of paper in Uzbekistan "soared" by more than 2 times.
If we take, for example, SvetoCopy paper (a pack of 500 liters). Its average cost in January 2022 was 48,000, and in April of the same year it has already risen to 98,000 soums. Entrepreneurs reported that due to the increase in prices, sales fell to 50%.
Over time, prices began to decline. At the time of writing, November 2023, the cost has recovered to the previous values of 45000-50000 soums.

Why did this happen

Problems with rising prices arose due to a temporary shortage caused by the shutdown of one of the largest paper producers - Svetogorsk Pulp and Paper Mill (brand SvetoCopy), which suspended its work due to the stoppages of the supply of chemicals for bleaching paper from Finland. But the company quickly found new suppliers of chemicals in China, India and Russia, which allowed to restore production and reduce prices, satisfying 80% of orders that were before the shortage. Since a significant part of paper and cardboard imports to Uzbekistan come from Russian enterprises, any price changes in Russia directly affect the Uzbek market.
